Now, here in 1983, the political and cultural “revolutionaries” of the middle class circa 1969, paying off at two points above prime, are not yet buying patriotism—but they are contemplating it, eyeing it warily, awaiting the next installment of Consumer Reports. To that extent, the people who inhabit The Big Chill have remained faithful to their younger selves. It’s just that the Cadillac has changed into a Mercedes. Kasdan genuinely appreciates the seven people here who once prowled the University of Michigan together in the jagged years (as he did, 1966–72). From the shocking title sequence, he sets out the notion that the Ann Arbor 7 have come to mourn the passing of an eighth as something larger than a friend’s death.
- You're kidding. - That's great! Even fortune cookies are getting cynical! It's pragmatic. I think it's touching.
You're one tough cookie. I could say you're one.cold, manipulative guy and it wouldn't bother you. I'm deeply hurt. At least our last night will be fun. Please don't do this, guys. This is happening because we miss him. And we're really hurting.
I yelled at him. That's probably why he killed himself.
Not only was there no place to hide in the sixties, no one seemed to want to. There were so many loose cannons on deck, rolling and shooting at the bridge, that everyone believed at long last they were being confronted by the guns of truth. And like the old man and the sea, the best of the rock priests questioned their own authority, and so increased it. Forget the reasons for the sixties. Numbers were reason enough. The torch passed in every town the day in 1955 when Fess Parker materialized from a Cadillac and each six-year-old in a coonskin cap sensed the bemused indulgence on Dad’s face was really terror.
Look what I found in Alex's papers. I will be in Detroit sometime on this deal.and I'm just dying to meet your boys.
Look at the water. - What's this? - What kind of towel? - Super towel.

I am sick of people selling their psyches for attention. He was classier than that. It was a real classy act he pulled in the bathtub. For some people it isn't a question of why kill yourself, but why not. Give me a break. Spare us the tragic existential pose. Didn't mean to get into your area.
That's not what we're saying. I don't know. I'd hate to think it was all just.fashion. Our commitment. We accomplished things. - All evidence to the contrary. - You're just taking a position.

Inspired by John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, college students embraced the Civil Rights movement, the antiwar movement, drugs, sexual freedom and women’s liberation. The times were a-changin’. Somewhere along the line, however, much of the Woodstock generation slipped away from its utopian quest and joined the establishment. People cut their hair, traded public sector jobs for the more lucrative private sector, got married, had families. What did it all mean? Was all this youthful idealism just fashion?

I was just trying to keep the conversation lively. So you'll continue to love me no matter what? Just don't cross me. Could you help me in here for a sec? Well, I think I've had enough. I love you very much. I want you to do something for me.

I'm opening a club. Like Elaine's, but hipper. Elaine's is dead. You got the money? Almost, almost. Well, let me know. What do you mean?
I'm going to sleep. How can you go to sleep?
I'm just deciding this as we speak. It's not going to happen this weekend. Maybe it's a sign from God that I should reconsider.
No, I'm not in the mood. Wait a minute. What is that, a lude? Do you take a half? Full stomach, I'd take a whole. Right, I'm sure you would. What the hell.
So what do you do? I'm going to have a baby. She was young when Robin and I divorced. Now she has a new father.

During the weekend, the friends, joined by the dead man’s much younger girlfriend, reminisce about their past and sort through their present lives. Kasdan and Benedek drew upon memories of their own college friends to create the characters. The ensemble of Glenn Close, Kevin Kline, William Hurt, JoBeth Williams, Tom Berenger, Mary Kay Place, Jeff Goldblum and Meg Tilly work together with the familiarity of old friends. In order to create this intimacy, Kasdan brought his cast to South Carolina, the setting of the movie, for a month’s rehearsal in a house outfitted with sixties memorabilia. In addition to the easy comradery of the excellent, attractive cast, the funny-poignant episodes and the bright dialogue, The Big Chill has a terrific soundtrack brimming over with Motown and other sixties hits. Meg Kasdan, the wife of the director, and also a performer in the film, put together music by the Rolling Stones, Three Dog Night, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson and others which functions as a kind of Proustian shorthand to set the mood, comment on the action and spark private memories in the viewer. John Bailey’s photography and Ida Random’s production design add to the pleasures of this companionable film.
Harold, don't you have any other music? Like, from this century? There is no other music in my house. There's been a lot of terrific music in the last 10 years.
Yes, sir, Mr. Give me a break, that's my name. So you just fell asleep? That's what I just said, didn't I?
I love you all so much. That sounds gross, doesn't it? No, it doesn't. I feel I was at my best when I was with you people.
- Say you believe me. I believe you. I always believe you. Honest to God, I know it's crap. That's why I'm getting out.
Help me with these bleeding hearts. I know what Alex would say. What's for dessert?
