I believe in further studies. If someone wants to continue a career in retail, I'll support them, but go to school as long as you can and if I can give you a little bit of help during the time that you were working for me, it makes me feel good,' he said. 'I didn't know how much we were going to give out since it was a first year program, but all of the students that I'm giving it to were all great employees and I'm losing most of them because they're going to be moving on. They have to earn their jobs. We have dependable students and that's what we're trying to bring up and hire.' The staff and students of Canadian Tire enjoyed a barbecue yesterday to celebrate their achievements.

McKellar says the $2,500 she receives each year pays nearly a third of her tuition costs. To cover the rest, she has an RESP set up by her parents, an ongoing summer job at a marina and student loans. 'Because the scholarship is continuous, I can focus more on my studies and not on where I'm going to get my funds,' Ms. McKellar says.

The Canadian Tire students enjoying a barbecue and scholarship celebration Yesterday, the students of Canadian Tire celebrated their hard work and success. Over $10,000 in scholarships were distributed to the student employees, simply from dedicating their time and hard work to the store. Owner Michel Deguire started the initiative of providing his part-time employees looking to pursue post secondary education with an alternative to the scholarship program the corporation already offers. 'Canadian Tire corporation offers a scholarship program, and I had one of my students go through a lot of hoops for getting a scholarship from our home office, and it didn't quite work.
'There aren't many companies who give out this kind of scholarship. I'm proud to work with a company like Coke.'
When Alexandria (Alex) McKellar entered Grade 9, she began booking guidance counsellor appointments to discuss what university to attend. Even at that young age, she wanted to become an archeologist. Her mother, Wanda McKellar, a financing representative with Canadian Tire's Roadside Assistance team in Welland, Ont., also knew that when the time came, her daughter could apply for a company scholarship to help with the costs. It has all worked out.
I felt a little bit bad for that student, so I said why don't I come up with something for my own students in the store here,' Deguire explains. 'If they want to graduate with me, I will give them an incentive going from $1 to $2 an hour - depending how long they work for us, that I will give them when they graduate from grade 12 in my store.' Recent graduate from the Swift Current Comprehensive High School, Brendon Burnay, was one of the recipients. 'For me as I graduate, it's going to help me with my post secondary going into power engineering, hopefully in Swift Current here or if I get accepted anywhere else that I apply for,' he said. 'It's a great deal.

Billes scholarship that honours the company's co-founder and is worth $2,500 a year for a maximum of four consecutive years. In 2012, the Coca-Cola Johnston Legacy Scholarship gave out 90 one-time awards worth $5,000 (U.S.) each and 10 Skeeter Johnston four-year $20,000 (U.S.) scholarships to the children of Coca-Cola employees in Canada and the United States. 'This scholarship was a great relief for our family,' Mr. 'Otherwise, Suday would be forced to take a part-time job this has really allowed him to focus and take some extra credit courses because he wants to go for his MBA after finishing his undergraduate education.' 'Coca-Cola goes out of its way to help families who really need this money to advance their ambitions,' Mr.
As long as they're in my store, I'll give them the flexibility and they continue to contribute to giving good service, I guarantee them that I will give them a scholarship at the end of their studies and good luck for them when they leave, but all the time that they're working for us they give us the maximum,' said Deguire. 'They're not looking for another job, because they're going to lose the scholarship if they leave. For all of the employees that have started since we began the program, as long as they work more than six months they are eligible for a scholarship when they graduate from grade 12.' Deguire adds there is one student that will receive $2500 for three years of work at the store. 'Everything helps when they're going onto university or moving on to Saskatoon or Regina, and I want them to have a good experience in our store.
Alex McKeller qualified for Queen's international study program and was able to go to Britain to study for her first year. Saw all these places like Stonehenge and Hadrian's Wall, it just made me love history even more and want to be an archeologist, excavate my own sites and participate in history.'
