Muramatsu Serial Number List
It is operated (opened) by the first finger on the right hand, which presses on a lever just above the B-flat lever. Besides producing a true C♯ when placing down the first finger in the left hand, this lever allows the flutist to produce numerous trills more accurately.

I am happy for people to see my enthusiasm for these flutes, but I would never tell anyone that this is the make for them. I have also tried amazingly interesting flutes from other well known manufacturers, both American and Japanese and would urge you to spend some time finding your way around these instruments. As I have made very clear above, we are all different and are looking for a wide range of varying possibilities out of the instruments we play. If it is a handmade instrument that you are looking for, ask to take it away for a few days, play it to friends with ears you trust and spend some time carefully going through the instrument with a tuning machine. In this way, you will discover the idiosyncracies of the instrument and be able to reach a logical conclusion as to whether or not the instrument is right for you and your physical make up. Finally, be guided by your instincts. The world would be a much poorer place if we all ended up with identikit flutes!
I personally have problems with this make of flute, particularly in the very bottom end of the instrument, where I find it difficult to get certain notes up to pitch. From my orchestral experiences, I have found it much easier to physically adapt my playing to bring potentially sharp top octave notes down than to lift up flat bottom octave notes. The latter becomes even more relevant in a p dynamic. Therefore it makes life a lot less stressful in those Shostakovich symphonies with flute solos in a p dynamic that travel down to the last notes on the instrument to play on a flute that is not flat at the low end. Other composers where a flat bottom octave can make life difficult: Mahler, Stravinsky, Ravel, Debussy etc. When looking for a new instrument I would urge all potential purchasers to try out all of the mainstream makes of flute. Whilst I currently play on a Powell flute, all I can say is that this make works for me and I am thoroughly happy with the instruments I possess.
Pricing is fair, and if the flute needs to be serviced, it is reflected in the selling price. Ask about any flute you are interested in. I don’t live in the United States, can I buy a flute from you? We are able to sell Muramatsu flutes outside the country if your country has no Muramatsu distributor. Email us at for more information. We will ship and deliver anywhere in North America. What should I do if my Muramatsu is stolen?
The events of several years prior to this moment then slowly came back to me. Needless to say, I dismantled the left hand mechanism of the flute and stripped out the offending plasticine.

* GOLD MODELS’ ORDERS (Please read attentively and save yourself a lot of money) * My prices to client’s-order-to-factory I keep very close to the chest. They are in fact the price I pay to Muramatsu, plus a fixed and reasonable checking-and handling fee. You are surely aware of the price-war out there in the flute world but – the good news is – that my price policy for the Muramatsu top-models assure you the best price you can possibly get (worldwide including at the Muramatsu shops).
Valerie of Muramatsu America is tremendously helpful and a joy to deal with. I asked her your question and this is her reply: I 'm sure she doesn't mind me sharing it here. Dear Regina, The only Muramatsu models that list their model name are the EX and GX models. The first generation have EX/GX followed by a three or four digit serial number engraved on the rib near the first post. (EX123, etc). The second and third generation EX and GX models are engraved on the back of the neck of the body.
What is the C♯ trill option? The C♯ trill consists of an added tone hole above the thumb key on the left hand. This tone hole is the actual C♯ tone hole for the flute.
REMEMBER DEAR FLUTIST that at your purchase, I serve YOU in the first place. I currently own a C foot or B foot instrument, and I would like to purchase a new foot joint. Are they available as extra parts? Every component of every Muramatsu flute is made to order. Older flutes (pre-1981) cannot have a new foot joint or headjoint made since these items are no longer in production. Solid silver flutes most likely can have new parts manufactured, but Muramatsu America has to check availability, price, and timing for each individual flute.
The third generation will have the model with Roman numeral lll. All of the other models, ST, DN, AD, DS, SR, Alto,Platinum Clad, and Gold all have a five digit serial number engraved on the front of the neck of the body. Based on the serial number and features of the flute, we can determine the model. These models are not engraved with their name. The word silver appears on the rib if the flute is silver. Addressing your follow up question, what you are seeing on the foot joint would be GX, followed by two digits, which would be the last two digits of the serial number found on the back of the neck of the body.
If anybody knows something about those older flutes, or can refer me to a link, it would be greatly appreciated. Muramatsu Japan is not very helpful either; they wrote that this flute is too old to have it in there records. Can't tell me anything about it!!! I don't work for any flute company but with most student flutes I can tell easily by its serial number, model number, condition, when they were approximatly produced and what they are worth on the used market (the price I pay & the price they can be sold once overhauled). But nobody working for Muramatsu can help me!
After the flute has been manufactured, neither a C# trill key nor a Split E mechanism can be added to the flute. However, a high E facilitator (also known as E ring, or donut), can be installed in your Muramatsu flute. Do you offer a trial period?
A flute teacher is asking me to help him sell his Muramatsu flute. I have no idea what would be a fair price for it.
What does “North American specifications” mean? North American specifications refer to pitch, spring tension, headjoint, cut, etc.

As an example, I find it difficult to articulate far forward (recommended by many well-known teachers), as I have a narrow mouth and a wide tongue. For people with a more ‘standard’ mouth, I will advise them to articulate further forward initially, but it doesn’t work for me. A further problem is that language also plays a significant part in our approach to articulation (and indeed sound), but this is probably best left for another time! In other words there are so many variables that go into the creation of a note on the flute. The scale of the instrument is one of these, but by no means is it the ‘be all and end all’.
Normally, this overhaul job runs $800 in our shop, but some shops would charge over $1,000 for this level of work! Specifications are: - Solid Silver,.014' Headjoint (original) - Solid Silver,.016' Body - Solid Silver Keys - Y-Arm Construction - Closed Hole - Low B Foot - Off-Set G with Delrin High E Facilitator - Gold Springs - Straubinger Pads While the original case is included, it is not in the best of condition. So we are also including a new carved wood flute case lined with ultra-suede as well as a new Cavallaro case cover. Since we have overhauled the flute, we will include a 1 year shop warranty covering adjustments for free through our shop. The flute would have to be returned to our professional shop for this service. This flute plays phenomenally!
